I always dreamt of how my life might have been if I lived in the age of my grandmother, or even my great-grandmother. A bustling Harlem that lit up as soon as the sun went down, or the roaring world gilded by the words of F. Scott Fitzgerald (before he was a legend in his own right). Shoulders draped in exotic furs (I'd like to think they were faux, this is my dream after all), or dancing in a sea of red-lipped women trying to get a glimpse at the ever-handsome Elvis Presley.
The 20s all the way through the 50s seemed like quite a time to be alive.
And though each decade had its problems, I can't help but fantasize how each might have been.
Aside from dreaming, here are a few ways to add that touch of glamour and sparkle into your everyday life...
+ A touch of red.
The easiest way, and arguably my favorite way, to feel oh-so-glamorous has always been by way of red. Rouged cheeks, bold pumps, and of course, that timeless scarlet lip. Though I have about a thousand red lippies in my arsenal that I adore (I swear they are different, and no I will not stop), a brand I recently came across exudes all things vintage glamour. Bésame, meaning kiss me in Spanish, is a cosmetic company created by a woman born in Buenos Aires and based in SoCal who shares my love (or rather, obsession) with history, art, and vintage makeup. The packaging reminds me of the makeup I always see placed on women's boudoirs in black and white films, and the formula is highly pigmented, creamy, and long-lasting. Here is my lovely lipstick bullet in the shade 1935 Cherry Red (swatched above), as well as my lip and cheek rouge in the shade Crimson.
+ Pamper and indulge. Champagne highly recommended.
Bubble baths, lotions, creams, fragrance... Treat your body and mind right and just completely relax like Miss Monroe would, no doubt with a glass of champagne in her hand. There are few moments in a day, or even in a week, when we truly get to indulge, so make it your glam habit. I love using Lush bath bombs for silky skin (my faves are Tisty Tosty and Butterball), then topping off with a yummy fragrance that suits my mood in that moment (Lavanila's Healthy Fragrance in Vanilla Grapefruit or Scandalous by Victoria's Secret is my usual go-to).
MM once said, "what do I wear to bed? Why, Chanel No. 5, of course..." And though this fragrance isn't for everyone, it does smell much better once on skin - and hey, perhaps the knowledge that Marilyn once donned this fragrance will be all the glamour you need. Lucky for us, Chanel not only sells this exact fragrance, but a whole range of No. 5 products - powder, body cream, bath soap, foaming bath, body lotion, toilette spray, body oil, and cleansing cream. Divine.
+ Diamonds aren't a girl's only friend...
Most of us don't have the luxury of covering ourselves in the world's most expensive diamonds and jewels. But, we can always make our skin as glimmering and glowing as a diamond. I love a completely highlighted look, so dust all that shimmers on your cheekbones, below and just above the brow, the cupid's bow, and just a touch on the tip of your nose. And don't let the shine end there... Take a big kabuki brush and highlight your décolletage, and even your legs if you are showing off those lovely stems. Stay tuned for a special post on my new makeup bag MVP - the best highlighter I have EVER used. It's that good.
